Loss of a Great Man
For those of you in Washington you may have heard about the state wildlife biologist Rocky Spencer's death several weeks ago. He was working on a project near Yakima, relocating big horn sheep when he walked into helicopter blades and was killed. Rocky was a great man who loved all animals and had dedicated his life to helping people coexist with some of the most mis-understood animals of all, carnivores. I knew him from the store were I work, Rocky's co-worker was a 4 year old karelian bear dog named Mishka. My store sponsored Mishka and we provided his food. Rocky and Mishka would come in about every two weeks to get food and he would always stay and chat. I am still in shock the Rocky is gone, he was such a kind man. He really loved what he did and worked so hard to help people understand that these animals were not vicious killers. I just hope that who ever takes over Mishka's care will have the same love for what Rocky worked so hard to build. Rocky was also very instrumental in getting the karelian bear dog program started. They are true working dogs and have made a big difference in Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife ability to serve to public and the animals with limited negative impact on the animals.
