It definitelty depends on what type of
UTH you are using...
The Zoo Med, and any of the others that stick on,
IMO are not worth wasting your money on...they heat unevenly, even when connected to the same thermostat...cannot be safely removed...and are just a pain in general
I use Ultratherm mats, you can get these from the Bean Farm, or Reptile basics...these mats are great, and far superior,
IMO, to any other
UTH out there...
I attach them to the bottom of my plastic cages with aluminum foil tape, which holds great, and if I need to reposition the mat, it is easy to remove as the mat itself is not sticky...
I have 23X11" mats on all my 4' cages, controlled by one Ranco double thermostat, and they work fine, even with the room at 73F or so...
The only thing I have noticed, is that the temps on the cool side will drop off drastically if the humidity gets too low...which is a big problem in this dry area...so I've just started misting the cages liberally every day, in the morning...this way the temps stay around 80F on the cool side...
I also insulate all my cages with Reflectix foil insulation...which I'm sure helps the mats work better...and lowers my electric bill...
Hope that helps...
