Yea, they are VERY cool, cheap pets, yet ENDLESSLY entertaining. They are completely aquatic salamanders that live their whole lives in the water, breed and die in a "larval" form, which is cool. its like a huge tadpole, that likes to kill and eat things.
They are VERY hard to photograph, just because taking pictures of anything that is in water is hard. not getting the glass reflection, focusing on a swimming object, all not-awesome-fun things to work with
They are actually illegal in the state of california, all
Ambystoma are because bass fishers, when they werent catching anything, would just dump them into the water, where they would breed and thrive, out competing the native species, the california tiger salamander, which is now threatened.
I have been thinking about petitioning the state to allow color morphs [non wild types, like the brown one pictured] to be allowed, because those obviously wouldnt be able to survive in the wild.
Some pet stores carry and sell them here [like
EBV] and if you get a permit you can keep them [same with Heloderma]
I love them, theyre like little aliens. Multiple males are compatible, and they are supposedly pretty prolific. When they do breed they lay 100+ eggs, but then you need to breed brine shrimp to feed the babies.
