Different species
Why is it such a bad idea to home 2 different species of frogs in the same terrarium? I understand if they have different needs, but if their needs are the same is it really that bad?

I don't know squat about frogs, but it's always a good practice to keep all pets seperate from one another.

not sure myself but i know a lot of people frown on houseing anything together cuz if one gets ill then the other will probably do the same and there are some illnesses that one may be able to host but will harm the other

Reptiles anyway.....mammals have differnet social requirements that reptiles or amphibians. People tend to place mammalian (or even human) emotion or needs on reptiles and amphibians that don't really apply. Where a dog (or even a ferret) might like the company of another dog (or ferret), a snake (and perhaps a frog...for which I am not expert) really aren't nearly as social and can actually stress if in an enclosed, unescapible space with a companion other than breeding season.
Just My Opinion...so take it for what it is worth.

Ok well I don't know much about the frogs but I was at the vivarium the other day and talking about the poison dart frogs with one o' the guys. He said it would be ok to house two species that are similar in size together, but that is assuming they need the same environment an all. What kinda frogs you thinking about? I don't know but maby some frogs are territorial? Or they have different bacteria?

Hey Ayla~ I dont think this is always considered bad. In most of my research I have read that it isnt so much bad but you must consider WHAT species you would house together! If their needs are very similar and housing set up can be met for both meeting their needs in every aspect then maybe just consider their homeland origin. Some species may do well together but if one is say from S. America and one is from Asia is it a common thing for them to be interacting together? Is one considered prey of another species ? Do they carry any toxins naturally? Maybe just really research their natural habitat from their homeland and base a desicion on things of that nature also. Stress should be watched for and you can always risk one gets sick so does thee other and also some DONT do well with cage mates so really research that aspect!!! Pacman= never more than one!!! :scared: In all ...as long as their size is definitley equivelant...A MUST ..then it may not be bad. Of course always give a quarintine period before hand of at least a month or longer before puting them together ( IMO) is best for disease sakes. Also if it seems like its not working out you can always seperate them too! Hope that helps a bit!

Danktat put it perfectly.
Reptiles lack the ability to socialize beyond fighting/breeding. Sometimes they tolerate, but that is a best case scenario.
