Are boas smart?
would you say that a boa constrictor is a smart animal, capable of recognizing its owner and/or showing affection?
or are they just instinctive and just being tolerant of human company?

I don't know how smart they are but snakes definately become familiar with their owner. My ball python is handled by myself and my son and when we sit side by side he goes straight for me and up around my neck under my hair. I don't know about affection but comfortable non stressed means familiarity I think and a relaxed snake in no worries mode is just plain old fun to hold. I think they are just tolerant of us as we feed them and measure them and get on the computer and talk about them. Probably someone else here could tell you more specifically how smart they are but this is my opinion on the subject.

Many people will say that they do not feel emotions, as they do not posess the R-complex of the brain?
Me? I've got 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 bunny, and 3 snakes. My snakes are just as cuddly and sweet as all the fuzzy animals. I feel just as strong a bond with them as I do with any of my other "kids".
Its all a matter of personal opinion if you ask me.

i think they do have emotions. somedays both of my snakes are running around like nuts then other days they do nothing as in i dont feel like moving today. NAZ will be laying there doing nothing and if i grab the top of his tank he gets all happy..."you taking me out? huh huh huh"?

I definately feel the connection. My big 8 footer we let crawl around the house and he goes up to my girls bedrooms looking for them, if he doesn't see a girl in one room he comesout and crawls into the next room, if she's not there either he comes back down the stairs and lays in the middle of the room to wait for someone to pet him.
He'll lay there for hours if both girls are in the room.

thier brain is suppose to be the size of a pea and they say they are not smart at all. i totally disagree. they get us to wiggle thier food, they get us to help them shed. they get us to try different food and different colors of food to get them to eat. darn at one point i played dinner music . i call that pretty smart of them. they make us do what they want all the time.
as for emotions...god himself couldn't convince me that they feel nothing for us.
