My snakeletts love me... well... except Riley (the baby scrub) ...but he is getting there... we're making great progress!
He's eaten for me two weeks in a row and doesn't strike when I put my hands in the cage. He will strike at any sudden movements though, or if I take him out quicker than he wanted. But for the most part, when I put my hand in, he will get on it and let me gently take him out.
Yay!

Alright rub your face with a rat and see if the snake still loves you the love ends when hunger or another instinct takes over. Snakes are not nearly as territorial in behavior as monitors or crocodilians, so they tend to not just lash out every time you open the cage. My advice would be to try a more aggressive reptile like a varanid or croc and see how much your love will win their heart.

That is exactly my point there is a deep gray when emotions and instinct are involved. Where does one end and the other begin? Since humans have a limbic and neocortex, our level of understanding and dealing with emotions is far superior to reptiles. How ever certain incidents will cue our r-complex and revert our brains to the primitive level of a reptile (fear, aggression, lust, security, hunger etc....). In fact new studies blame the Amygdala (found in the "reptile brain") for men committing more aggressive crimes. So it is easy for our brains to revert back to the part which is commonly accepted as instinctual, it would be impossible for a reptile to create emotions and thoughts more advanced unless they sprouted more cortex layers.
