Substrate, oh the choices.

Ive been using Ecoearth coconut substrate since I got my snakes but the stuff is expensive, and although its supposedly ok for them to ingest some.. it still worries me. Sometimes they get a mouthfull of the stuff and it takes them awhile to work it out because its so fine. However its more natural looking and holds humidity/heat very well.

Im thinking of switching to pine shreddings because they are cheaper and also safe from my understanding. My concern with them is heat transferal. I use an aquarium style habitat so my UTH plays a vital role in keeping there tanks warm, and I cant imagine that wood chips transfer heat very well. There is also the moisture factor in an aquarium, I cant imagine wood chips holding moisture well without molding

I use 5 different substrates in a few cages. I have newspaper in one, Hemp in a couple, aspen in one, eco earth in a few, and paper towel in one.

newspaper here. Just before a litter is to drop I use shredded paper from a paper shredder. That is so the female can nest before giving birth.

Mostly newspaper, it's cheap and easy just like.. oh wait! lol When soiled, just crumple it all up, toss and replace. I just started using aspen for my corn snake since she likes to burrow and I sometimes use ecoearth for my ATBs, sometimes just newspaper.
Botis, if you swtich to a shreddings, please use Aspen instead of Pine, it's safer for the animals IMO.

It actually is aspen, Im not sure why I put pine.

Just like I told the lady at Petco I use cedar shreddings for my rats lol, she had a fit. I always get shreddings mixedup.

I use aspen for the guinea pigs, figured Id save money and use for my snakes too.

There pets, only rodents I actually like. Their poo is dry and scentless, they dont pee on me, and there the size of a miniature cat.

I actually had two females up until a month ago then one gave spontaneous birth. Apparently she got knocked up at the ripe old age of 4 months while she was at the store and I got the little bundle of mucus covered joy as a 2 for one sale lol.

Aspen, through and through. I like the look, I believe the boas feel comfortable and secure on it (my beliefs) and it's absorbent.

Haha, buy one get one. I used to raise them for show...yes, show...I'm a weirdo. My two girls are all thats left of my lines. I love them, even if they are loud and goofy You shouldn't have any issues with aspen. My snakes like to burrow in it and I like the way it looks.
