i have wondered the same... it seems to go up on occasion... and as far as I can tell it dont matter if I have 300 rep or 1 lol

There's a little balance scale between the post number and a caution triangle at the top of each post. You can use it to vote for or against someone's reputation (rep power). I think it's also ties to the green scale for reputation level.

When you add to someone's reputation, your rep power number will be the amount that the person receiving reputation gets.
So you have a rep ower of 4. If you added to my reputation, it would increase by 4.

I always thought it was determined by number of posts/thanked.

Click on your "user CP". Below the subscribed threads, there is a section for "Latest reputation received". I think "Thanks" and maybe even your post count will affect it as well. If someone actually voted for your rep, it will show their comment. You can click there and it will take you to that post so you can see.
