I did not replace the heating element, but when I had it cleaned, the guy told me it looked like a newer heating element. I have no idea when it was replaced. I would consider replacing the furnace for $900 right now if it could be done. But I don't want to spend over $3000 because I'm already upside down on the mortgage. The heating costs are quite high, but I'm told that the magic chef furnaces only run 80% efficient anyway, which is not a huge improvement. I also run heat lamps, take daily baths, and keep my heat on 80 frequently during the winter, so I think I will always have high heating bills.

I don't know if this discussion is interesting for anybody but us, stalk, but my pm box is 99% full, even after archiving a bunch of stuff. Otherwise I'd use it and spare everyone here the boredom of furnace talk.

I think most people lost hope for this thread, so nobody cares anymore LOL.

The person before you may have replaced it. And yeah, 80 degrees is the reason you are paying so much. LOL. It's probably taking quite a toll on your furnace.

My house is kept 65 degrees when I have other people around. It was 65 degrees for a few months when my brother was around, and my gas and electric bill was $75 a month. Usually I never use the furnace, even when it gets down to 40 in the house. I have a kotatsu for the cats. My dogs love the cold temps and it doesn't bother me. Those months my bill is about $40.

I keep my place at 80 mostly for the snakes. But I only have 624 square feet, and my heating bills get as high as $130-140 in the winter! Even in the summer when I use no heat or AC, my utility bills are $55-60. It's very unfair. I am on the ground floor and have 2 sets of sliding doors that also let in a lot of cold. My upstairs neighbor is lucky; I pay mainly to heat her unit, as heat rises. I will never have a ground floor place again.

If I were to post pictures and give measurements, would you be able to price a furnace like that in my area? If it's really as cheap as you say, I may consider flying you out to replace it and just be done with it. Every year I wonder if this is the year it will go.

P.S. You mean there was hope for this thread? lol

You could post a picture, that way I could get a decent estimate of what I would need and I should be able to guess what type of furnace would do best for you. 624 sq feet should only need a low btu unit which makes it cheaper. But I can't figure out much without a picture so we can at least start there.
