Help, My snake escaped!

Yesterday while we were gone, my boa got out of his cage. I have torn the house apart and can't find him. I have looked all over the yard and can't find him. He is about 6' long. I hope the cat didn't think he could tackle him.

Where would he go first? There is a small hole in the wall where I took out a wall heater, I don't know if he can fit through it or not.

My wife and her friends think all I have to do is put a rat in the cage and he will come back, I don't think it will work. Will it?

It gets down to about 25 degrees here at night, so if he got outside, he's a done for.

I am so worried.

Have any of you had this happen and is there anything else I can do?

We just recovered from the five day power outage we had a week or so ago, where he had to live in his rubbermaid tub by the fireplace to keep him warm and now this. I think if I get him back it's time to find him a more capable owner!

Joe

First off, don't panic. Most snakes will instinctively avoid extreme heat or cold. Secondly they can survive a long time without food so a rat in the cage really won't do much. You could try flour on the floor to see if you get any tracks (if you have wood or lenoleum). I have personaly had a "Houdini" escape and be missing for three months. When I reached in the closet to get something and I got tagged....lol....I suppose we startled each other. You also may want to try a pan of water near where you think it may be as your snake will need water far sooner than it will need food. Good luck and don't loose hope Your boa will turn up.

Chances are your snake can fit thru that hole. I have been shocked by what my snakes can fit thru.

Also, make sure you check thoroughly by his cage. I have a BCI that has escaped twice. Both times he only went 3 feet and hid behind his cage!!

Good luck man.

Usually when someone's boa has escaped, they have not gone very far. They will hide in very small spaces--behind the enclosure, under a piece of furniture, etc. They will look for the nearest place to hide. I do know of a ball python who escaped into a hole in the wall. If you think this might be the case, you can hire a plumber or a wildlife rescue person who has device with a camera on it for looking into walls. Good luck and keep us posted.

my rtb has escaped twice once he went in the next room (my sons room) and was in his dresser the other time he was gone for 4 days and we found him on the other side of the house on the kitchen counter curled up under a cake stand the funny thing was I had been cleaning the kitchen for over an hour and didn't see him my daughter found him when she walked in her eye level was counter hight at the time. when my first rtb escaped and curled up under the tv with all the cords. good luck finding him and make sure you make his cage escape proof when you do. dont give up on your self as an owner just learn from this and fix the problem.

Also, you should try to figure out a way to secure the cage to make it more snake proof during your down time.
