Aikido video
Thought this was pretty cool. People often ask how effective aikido can be agains other "trained" martial artists. This vid sort of shows how the style can work well against another style of martial art.
One of the complaints about aikido is that people don't train much against a kick. I think this vid shows that the same principles can be used equally effectively against a grab, punch or kick.

That fluid style is one of the things that originally attracted me to aikido. To me, when it is done properly it is equally beautiful to traditional Shaolin Kung Fu. There are definately arts that have a "harder core" training philosophy but that is something that I don't really need (particularly now that I am older...lol). To be effective AND have it look that good is [to me] what it is all about

^ LOL stigma
I dunno, Dank. There's nothing pretty about fighting. I think its supposed to be kinda hardcore.
I will admit that a well executed throw is a beautiful thing, though, be it judo, wrestling, aikido, whatever.
I know the video is a demonstration so its understandable that the opponent was semi-cooperative, but I think in a real fight, while the techniques may work, they probably won't look as pretty.
I really liked some of the techniques, though.
For me, effectiveness and efficiency are the most important factors in a martial art. That's probably obvious, though, as BJJ is probably the 'least pretty' martial art out there. I mean, who really wants to see 2 guys hugging each other on the floor.

YOu get that all the time when someone watches aikido. The cooperation isn't really to make the technique look good as much as it is to avoid injury. If you decide NOT to take the fall and resist against many of those techniques you will simply get injured (dislocations, breaks, collapsed windpipe ... etc). Ukimi isn't for the look as much as it is self preservation. I (at a younger age) was under the mind set that getting your body "tougher" was a way to win. The older I get, the more I am of the mold that if you simply avoid taking the hit to begin with then you don't need to be nearly as tough. Definatley NOT the approach of Muy Thia, or bjj....none the less just as effective (in self defense--not competition).
