Why buy when I can find them in the wild to photograph? I've kept them in the past so I can join your group if that counts?

It counts. Join up. Photographs are better anyway. You have them forever and never have to feed or clean up after them.

They sure are fun to look at, that's for sure. I'd only get one if I suddenly won the lotto and could afford to have anti-venom on hand... but if I could, I'd get a yellow eyelash pit viper.

having antivenen on hand isn't all it's cracked up to be. It has to be prepared and then given through IV. It's not like you just draw some up and give yourself a shot. Next time you go to the ER, take a vile of drugs with you and tell the doctor to please inject this. Typically, they won't use patient supplied drugs and will use their own or get what they need from whatever source they use. Not knowing the origin of a drug or being aware of how it was stored even if you can convince them that the expiration date is good...not many doctors will put their career on the line to trust drugs you bring with you. Because of all that, I limit any hots here to what is native so that I know the hospitals can readily obtain antivenen. Exotic species all too often presents a huge problem with finding the right one on time. If you are lucky, a local zoo would have what you need but It's not fair to deplete the stock from zoos who have keepers in the line of fire every day to treat some idiot keeper cause he thought it would be cool to have a pet gabboon viper.... IMO. Having a vile or two on hand isn't enough. A bad bite can consume SEVERAL viles over the course of treatment. It's very expensive and has a short shelf life...and again, just because you can afford to have it does not mean any doctor will use it so it's probably a waste to keep it anyway. Your best bet is to do a little research, find out who has it and keep that information handy. Then...PLEASE have a good reason for having the particular species to begin with. It won't be long before the zoos get fed up with supplying the hospitals to treat Darwin Awards contestants.

when i was younger i used to ketch cottonmouths, my moms fiance had a mansion and a lake. they use to chase us out of the water sometimes, luckily we never got bit, chris her fiance would either shoot them or capture them. they are mean little boogers, would try to bite you through glass.

Yeah, I figured it would have to be something worked out in advance with the hospital, where they stored it for you, etc. Of course, I'll never own a venomous snake, but it's fun to dream.
