I am not turning this into a debate about evolution, I was using it as a simple example that learning, neurons, chemical responses, brains, nervous systems no matter how rudimentary still can be easily compared in relation to small tasks and stimuli.
Julius you are absolutely correct natural selection and evolution is taking place. This is the case with the tuskless elephants.

Here is one thing that always blows my mind when comparing things of different species.
Chimpanzees are genetically closer to us than water monitors are to nile monitors. To the untrained eye, looking at a water monitor and a nile monitor (especially juveniles) they appear identical, yet we look very little like chimps. So one can not base observations on looks alone.
