Incredible stroke of luck
Well yesterday I was at the expo, and I had something happen to me, that I just wanted to share. I brought chomper to the expo, to display at my table. Obviously he was a little cranky from all the excitement. I wanted to take him out of his clear bin, to put him in a dark one so he could sort of get away from everyone. He was being difficult, but it was expected. While I was hooking him, and lifting him out of the cage he struck. I saw him go for the inside of my elbow...you know where you donate blood from? Well he went up, and it wasnt exactly a target that I could pull away. He snapped his mouth shut, and just grazed right over the vein in 2 places. At that point, I just put him in the dark bin, and left him alone. I was thinking about it later, and realized how close I came to a trip to the hospital. I think of it like this. I have seen his teeth, and the big ones are at least a half inch, I remember donating blood, and seeing them drain a pint in 5 minutes with just one small needle. I was thinking, what happened if he got a solid, well planted bite on that part of my arm? all those teeth, plunged into veins and arteries. If I could fill a pint bag of blood with one small needle hole, how much blood would I loose with like 40? I honestly believe that if he got me as he was trying to, I would have lost alot of blood, and likely required a trip to the hospital. Its such a wierd place for a snake to bite, but i guess it was just the most "accessible" to him.
Anyways, It really made me think, and I just wanted to share with you guys. Sorry, no pics of the current damage from him grazing me, cus its almost healed already...thats how lucky I was.
thnx for reading people

His teeth are a good inch long at least
And...unless you put a hollow needle or something in the veins or arteries he may puncture to keep the blood flowing, the blood spurting stops when you put some pressure on the spurters and they quickly seal themselves off because when you bleed, you clot...unless you are a hemophiliac. You would have made a mess, but you wouldn't have bled out.

The teeth are sheathed in gum like tissue. They are completely covered when the mouth is closed so as not to slice their own mouths up...which they tend to do on occasion anyway. When the mouth opens, they are only partially exposed. When they bite down, the sheath is forced back up into the gum line and the teeth are fully exposed as they embed into prey ...or your arm. Both top and bottom teeth are quite long. Even a fairly young one can sport 3/4 inches or more of teeth. Adults ... I have a skull somewhere. I should find it for you and take some photos. I never finished cleaning it. I used ants instead of beetles and it's still a little cruddy.
