As for the original question, they should always be separate. This is why I think so:
Many species of snakes ( eunectes genus comes to mind), will commonly cannibalize conspecifics, as well as other species they may be housed with...
Even with species not known for cannibalism, (like boa constrictors), horrific feeding mistakes can, and will happen.
Caution and close observation need to be used even during breeding...
Occasionally the female will decide to simply kill and eat the male, rather than breed with him....

I dont personally think that its a good idea.
Heres why:
You cant monitor fecal droppings.
If one gets mites they both get mites.
Competition for space
Accidental strangling
Feeding "complications"
Theres more reasons im sure.
Heres why you would:
You cant afford proper housing for them both
You are too lazy to clean two cages
You dont have proper space for two cages
Your a beginner and you dont know any better
That cover most of it? Ive only been a snake owner for a year and a half and these things are painfully obvious. Doesnt take an expert herpetoculturist.
