huh..... makes ya wonder I guess. Its weird tho that most people arent having probs. And in fact alot of people reccomend RP. That is really wierd. I has to be a somewhat isolated thing or more people would be having issues. Has anyone ever contatced them?

The only issue I have is that these things seem isolated but every time I hear about it the same company seems to be involved in some shape form or fashion.

I do tattoos. [hypathetically] Even if I didn't have people leaving my shop "often" with hepatitis C or HIV, the fact that I would have one "every once in a while as an isolated case" would probably be enough to put me out of buisness. Would you risk it when there are other shops? (Just a thought)

Oh I agree, what I meant was like you can have a bad batch of tylonol. Maybe it was somehting that happending during a period of time. For example maybe tre guy freezing last month was coughing on the rats. Hypothetically. Its weird tho and really makes ya think

Eeek. I have never done a frozen rodent order, and I am pretty grateful for it. I am thinking of contacting a local guy who builds rodent racks to get my colonies going again. breeding my own rodents and rabbits is not only cheaper then buying them individually from a store [but more expensive of course, then buying pre-frozen] but I also have COMPLETELY control over what they are fed, how they are housed, and bred, in relation to inbreeding, sick animals, and poor diets too high in protein. When doing rodents, maintenance, is REALLY limited to cleaning the boxes once a week, and checking on them to make sure they have food and water every day. I sell my excess to EBV which is where I buy my rodent chow, and getting cheap greens isnt that bad. for the money, and the guarantee on quality, If you have the space [like a garage], I cant promote breeding your own feeders enough.

I wish everyone the best of luck with their animals. A company as big as them, that is selling sick animals, and KILLING peoples animals, really should be out of business. I dont like to slander any company if it is unwarrented, but this obviously isnt an isolated event. Has anyone taken their experiences over to the BOI?

What a great thread. Adrian, I sure hope things work out for your suris. Thanks for putting this out there for us...you too Nicole. I'm going to start breeding my own rats. I've been thinking about it, but now I'm sure. Thanks again everyone.

I think this should be a "sticky" thread. Everyone needs to see it at least once, just to be safe.

I have been using rodentpro for over 3 years now with no problems. One time Rachel and I ordered from american rodent supply and my sav threw it up. His rodents smelled odd so I asked the local rescue I help out. They said they had the same problem. The american rodent guy brings stuff to a show where they are allowed to thaw in transport then refreezes them at the show then lets them thaw again on the way home, to refreeze them again. The shelter told me to stick with rodentpro but it is always good to hear others experiences.

thats one thing I like about breeding my own feeders.. I know what they are eating and how healthy they are for when my snakes eat the rodents. I understand for some people that is just easier to buy the feeders but for me it just makes sence to raise my own. but either way good luck!

Update--

My biggest girl seems to be fine. It just took her a really long time to digest the rat and her stool was grey and pasty.

The other girl is in shed. She has a billy goat's stomach so I am hoping she'll pull through too.

My conclusion so far...... XL, 2XL or 3XL Fat Rats = Bad news for BCC.

Toxic Rats = Bad news for any reptile.

Make sure you trust your rodent supplier.

I am going with the lean Jumbos from The Mouse Factory from now on, and then I'll make the switch to rabbits as soon as I can find a good supplier.

I like the points about raising your own feeders and admire those that can. Just isn't feasible for me. Ever.
