Switching my Jungle Carpet Python from mice to rats
Anyone who has been a member on this forum for a while probably remembers me complaining about my male JCP that wouldn't eat rats. I tried braining the rats, rubbing mice on the rats, etc. I even made a mouse broth and dipped a rat in it (super gross). Linus the JCP was not having it. I finally gave up and started feeding him mice. He's eaten a mouse every week for months now.
Well, the ever-knowledgeable David Loftin suggested that I feed him a mouse and stick a small rat in his mouth as the mouse is going in. So last week I tried it and it worked. Tonight, I offered him a rat and he refused. So I took the rat and rubbed a thawed mouse all over it, and what do you know, he ate the rat.
As I type this, I'm watching Linus eat his very first rat. I know I will probably have to scent the next few rats with mice, but I think he will be eating unscented rats soon enough.

That's great news. I usually give the same advice to people but never hear whether it works. Con-rat-ulations. That mouse broth sounds delicious, BTW. Who could resist that?

thats awsome, a carpet python should never touch mice, in my mind (it may sound harsh) but ANYTHING that is born big enough to eat a rat pink should NEVER touch a mouse

I totally agree, however, I think this guy was started on mice before I received him. Although, that's not what the breeder said.

Congrats on the progress with the switch. It is always nice to get over that hump. That is why I started all of my babies on rat pinks as opposed to mice so they wouldn't have to be switched later. Glad to hear yours is looking like it will be a success

Well as I sit here for over an hour waiting for Prada to make short order of the rat I put in his rubbermaid tub I wonder how many times am I gonna waste a Rat on him.. I just am having a very difficult time getting him to eat rats maybe if I wash it's fur and scent it with chanel? Aggravating!! I know he is supposed to be eating rats but are mice that bad for him after all they are in the same family!
