Breeding Leopard Geckos
im still in the process of acquiring the ones i like the most for this project, but im looking for some assistance. i have a 4' by 2' enclosure that i want to house Leopard Gecko's in. i am not quite sure on how my housing could be done safely.... i already know that i can not house 2 males together. would i be able to house 3 females together? or atleast multiple females? i would keep the male separate just so i know breeding does not occur before i plan it. i need some assistance on when is "breeding season", what are the main difference between morphs and how can you tell? is it just based on memory and knowing what colorings are what? i have seen multiple variations. i have also heard that there are differences between a leopard gecko and a tangerine gecko? they are both leopard geckos though correct? just looking for some good information on breeding? dont post a bunch of websites on breeding though please. i have probably already found them and read them. im looking for personal opinions and personal knowledge of the subject. even if you have not breed them yourself still feel free to post though.
Thanks all,
Wayne

Housing more then one leo together can be a problem, even if there all females. Even female leos will bully or fight. I am not saying it cant be done, had 2 females together for many years without probs. If you want to attempt it, make sure the females are about the same size and the cage is big enough, keep a close eye on them and be prepared to seperate them if there is any problems. Before deciding to breed you need to stop and think. Can you feed and care for the baby leos if you cant find them homes?. Its important that the leos are of age and wieght before breeding, especially with the females. Females need to be atleast 50 grams and healthy. There are many different leo morphs, tangerine is a morph of leo.

I suggest picking up "The Herptoculture of Leopard Geckos" by Ron Tremper, it has alot of really comprehensive information about all the different aspects of keeping and breeding leopard geckos.

thanks
i found a really pretty tangerine female. i have a downpayment on here til the 21st. i hate having to wait for paydays. gives me more time to set up her tank though. i will have room for separate tanks if i have problems housing multiple leopards together.
thanks,
Wayne

I personally have kept quite a few groups of 5 Female Leopard Geckos together with no problem. I have heard of many people that have had issues with doing this. With acquiring new geckos. You should always keep them seperate until you are sure they are eating well and are not sick. I would always recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet just to make sure everything is ok. If you do already have a Reptile Vet.. here is a LINK to a great resource for finding one in your area. I am really not sure if you would be able to utilize a 4' x 2'. I think if you were to securly divide the tank in half you would really be able to use that tank very well. Let us know if you have any other questions.

divide tank
If i divide the tank in half how would that help me with keeping the geckos? separate the females out a bit more? i know i cant have more than one male together. wouldnt the bigger tank be better for establishing territories? im just trying to see the reasoning. if i divide it how would i go about separating the geckos?
going to bed i might get a chance to get on here tomorrow. i have finals for school starting tomorrow morning. ill try and get on and check some replies.
Thanks for the help.

It will be a lot easier to heat.. and if you decide on keeping multiple geckos.. You could always keep a single animal in each half of the tank. Thats what I meant to say. IF you decide to breed later on you could house the male on one side when you are not breeding and you could house them together when they are breeding. Its all up to you. Good luck on your finals.
