Can snakes....

can snakes cough?

I've heard from alot of people that they can, but the vet at my work said its virtually impossible for a Snake to cough...

Does any one have experience with this?

he probably said that b/c snakes don't have a diaphram so they can't cough in the way we would... but i think they can "cough" alittle lol

exactly. without a diaphragm their cough is much weaker. it is 'virtually' impossible to cough, but they can still pretend-cough but its very weak.

I have heard that they cannot cough, and that is why a respiratory illness is so dangerous for them.

This is what I learned as well, humans can expell congestion mucous, snakes basically drown in their own mucous when they have RI....

Imagine the worst bronchitis of your life, and not being able to cough...

I think snakes can breathe very forcefully, but nothing compared to what a human cough is like...

I was just wondering, A lady comes into my work and she has (Im pretty sure its a 14 ft burm but Im not sure.) Any way his name name in Monty and she said when she got him he was really sick and ever since he's always had a cough. She says it sounds just like a humans cough. Weird.

But the Vet at my work said that was impossible. I was just wondering who was right, the doctor or the lady with the first hand expierience......

ive heard snakes make a cough sound before...many times....it is strange to hear it but they can exhale very rapidly and make a funny noise...ive heard this mostly with burms with RI infections and they usually point there head upward when they make the sound...its not so much a cough but a rapid raspy and sometimes almost a barking sound kinda like a tokay gecko sound....
