We had the same thing happen. A crop of mites manifested out of nowhere. A friend told me that they can lie dormant on the snake for a long time, and then BOOM. You're infested.

If you can dig up $5-6 change in your couch/car/carpet () your can buy the Wal-mart version of Nix shampoo, mix it with a gallon of water, and spray the heck out of EVERYTHING. Spray the snake while she is in the tote, and soak down her cage/water bowl/decorations/etc. Those suckers can hide anywhere, so make sure to get all corners, cracks & crevices. (I even sprayed the carpet around Apollo's cage, just in case!!) Make sure you rinse everything, especially the water bowl out well, but don't put it back in the cage until everything has dried. I waited 24 hours. I went ahead and put new substrate in, and misted the new substrate with the "Nix-mix" as well... a sort of secondary treatment, as he crawled thru it.

I hope this helps. There are lots of folks that know more about this than me... FOR SURE.

So far, I haven't seen anymore, and Apollo hasn't been soaking...

My favorite treatment for mites, comes from Walmart as well...

Go to the section in the store where they sell human lice treatment...

You are looking for 'Equate' brand "bedding spray for lice"...it's a small aresol can, and the only active ingredient is 0.5% permethrin...runs about $4...

Remove the snake, substrate, etc...put the old substrate in a garbage bag and get it completely out of the building as quickly as possible...

Clean the cage thouroughly with a mild bleach solution, mites are filthy pests...this will not kill the mites/eggs, but will eliminate any bacteria or viruses they may have smeared around...rinse it out and let it dry really well...

Do the next step in a well ventilated area...outside if possible...evenly spray all over the cage...inside, outside, bottom, lid...(this will help kill stragglers that might crawl out of the cage, air holes, etc...

Also, whatever new substrate you are going to use, spray it as well...I reccomend white paper towels...this makes the dead mites much easier to see...and gives them no place to hide/lay eggs.

Let it dry completely, I leave it for at least 10 hours...the spray is safe if dry, but it must be dry...the propellant is harmful if inhaled, and needs to evaporate completely...

Once this is done, place the snake, substrate, water, back in the cage...the mites will die on contact with the permethrin when they fall off the snake after feeding...the spray has an ongoing effect, it keeps killing the mites for weeks...eventually there will be none left...

I usually repeat this treatment every two weeks, untill I haven't seen any dead mites in the waterbowl or cage for quite some time...

Hope this helps and good luck...

Not that we can sometimes help feeding live... my ball pythons all eat live, and my boas all eat f/t. Anyway, keep in mind that the infestation could have happened from a live feeding (if you do feed live). Let's not forget where a lot of us get our live prey items (mostly from pet stores where some of the time the reptiles have mites, and thus easily transferred). This is of course, my opinion. If you dont feed live, well then -- they just miraculously spawned from nowhere. It's happened to me once or twice.
