Ok,am i missing something here?Nix contains Permethrin,i was always under the understanding that it is a compuond that needs to be used cautiously.Like not getting in eyes, mouth, food or water. It's the same stuff in Provent a Mite.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permethrin

It says here that it is a broad spectrum chemical, and kills indiscriminately. It also kills cats.

I can't answer your question. All I know is that I have used this method twice for mite control, it has worked, and has not harmed the snake.

Nix spray has permetherin. Shampoo wouldn't have permetherin or it wouldn't be safe to put on a kid's head. It's probably a very mild insecticide but I don't know anything more about it than what I've said. I'm sticking with permetherin spray and treating the cages instead of the snake. It's always worked flawlessly and requires no unscheduled cage cleaning.

A friend of mine also told me that the Bronx Zoo in NY uses this method. I have had to use NIX 2 times in all the years I have been keeping snakes.

It does work but follow the direction given. Now when I get a new snake I treat it like if it had mites. This way I know I will not have any problems.

What I really like about NIX is that it has a pleasant smell and it can be applied on the snakes whole body. I have done what was shared here and it works like a charm.

Actually the creme rinse has permethrin too,That's why this method seemed questionable to me.

You can get permethrin at the feed store and dilute it and put it into a spray bottle. One bottle will last a lifetime and use for use is cheaper than nix or anything else commercially available. Most of the treatments for lice contain permethrin.
While I recently read an account of where one commercial producer of reptile permethrin saying his permethrin is different and better, my experience of substitutions in the human pharmaceutical industry of generics for name brands leads me to believe that this may not be critical. To be sure, in certain cases like cardiac medications an exact name brand is occasionally necessary, but I would not think this applicable to lice.

Exactly, all chemicals should be used cautiously. That doesn't mean you can't substitute the exact same chemical that is available cheaper elsewhere, that is what the expensive purveyors would have you believe.
But you do need to be careful, research and follow directions.
