what should I use now
We had a guy taking care of our snakes for us for a while when we were waiting for our house to close so we could move in and he let our male snake get very sick :cursing: that was an expencive vet bills but he has been fine for over a year now and the vet told us to start using news papper in the cage till he got better so we have been using it in both cages ever sence then. Shenzy has been moving her cage around and pushes all the news paper in the corner and all thats under her is glass. any sugjestions on what we should use? we feed them in there cages but could change that if we have to (we would rather not) we were using bark before he got sick but we dont want to use it again. :confused1:

I prefer newspaper (my snakes mess it up too). Aspen shavings work well.

Eek, its stories like that, that scare me away from ever leaving town, because I would die if something happened to ANY of my animals.
For my larger boas, I use something called "fibersorb" its a recycled cardboard material, *kindof* the same idea as care fresh, but its ground up VERY fine [finer then aspen] and i feed in the cage, and ingesting it isnt a problem. Its not exciting to look at since its all grey, but smaller snakes can burrow in it, and its super absorbent.

Reptile carpet, newspaper, paper towels....These are the easiest options IMO.

I'm using newspaper for my larger and some of my medium/smaller snakes. Easy to clean, cheap to replace.
For my burrowers-E. African Sand boas, Hognose-I'm going to try this "white wood" shavings product I picked up last night at the store. I've had bad luck with aspen in the past, the aspen at pet stores seems to be infested with wood mites (which I think is why most of the wood picked up at pet stores is). Wood mites don't hurt snakes, but look bad.
For itty bitty non-burrowing babies, I use paper towels. Again, easy to clean and cheap to replace.
I use Reptile carpet for displays at shows only. I've found it tends to gather feces and after a few washes, the feces get inside the fibers.
One cage substrate I've been thinking of using is unprinted newspaper. I was told that it could be purchased from any newspaper supply company, but that sounds more expensive than spending $1.50 on the Sunday paper!

newspaper, packing paper, paper towels, recycled cardboard, and aspen are all good substrates.
I use aspen on top of newspaper.
personally, i dont like cleaning and reusing repti carpet...i'd rather throw away and replace with new substrate.
