dude im acting mature. im listening to you yes. i get what your saying. i do not belive a 6ft enclosure for a burmese is ok or a retic. i do think that an 8ft though is a pretty good sized enclosure, but i may be wrong.

And what is the largest snake you have? If your burm is already large, which it is not, then you can't suggest you know more than someone else. Just my opinion.

Bigger snakes in the wild still travel quite a bit. Just because folks keep huge snakes in tiny, cramped enclosures with no room to move, doesn't mean they wouldn't move around if given more space. The only reason most large snakes don't move around much is because they are fed way too much and don't have to go looking for food. Most large captive constrictors are overweight.

Alrighty people, lets reel it back in. Debate is critical in keeping ideas fresh but hostility and negativity will only result in arguments and then nobody learns.

*The orignial question was about heat mats. Again, I use UTH's exclusively but I am only able to do that because the room that I keep my snakes in is kept at a high enough ambient temperature that it will work for me.

*I don't consider belly heat "unnatural" as many snake use rocks and such to bask on after the sun has already heated them up. I do find it more difficult to regulate the "air" temps with heat mats, uth's, heat pads etc...than with some other types of heating.

*a 6 foot cage for a male burm will last quite a while but eventually you may want to step up to an 8 footer. A female may outgrow a 6 foot cage in just a couple of years. Try going for 1 suqare foot of floor space (not as much height but floor space) per foot of snake legnth. So, a 6' x 2' cage will be appropriate for a snake that is 12 feet. Bear in mind that a retic has a smaller footprint on the cage floor than a burm of the same legnth as they are not as thick a snake as a burm (when healthy)......-note- these are minimum cage requirements, not what many consider "ideal".

*Just to clarify, all I used to own was retics and burms before I switched my focus to boas.

*Finally, lets keep things civil here. This isn't about who knows more or who has done this longer. Everyone here has experiences that others can learn from. Let's not assume that people here can't be of help just becuase of what we "percieve" thier experience level to be. You would be suprised what things you can pick up from the least expected sources.........that being said, there is alot of experience here so an occasional "listen" to some who have been around for a while may be a good idea.

my mother had a burm that was between 17-18 feet while i was growing up, i currently have my burm in a 6x2 and she is 9 feet. and its starting to get cramped.

i will be building my burm a 12x6x6 cage for her adult cage, i agree with x-factor he is not one to argue with man, sit back take some advice and learn.

the bare minimum for a burm in my opinion is a 8x3, and if you properly set up the cage, which means you will have a water bowl big enough for them to soak in you are probally going to have a 3x3 or bigger water bowl in there for them to soak, now you are down to 5x3 of space left. you need to plan out for things like this, personally my burm is going to have a pond to soak in. less inst better my friend and if that is how you feel about snakes maybe you are in this for the wrong reasons, you should have pets because you want to spoil them, not because you want to slap them in bare minimums or LESS, and call it good.

uth, not great but for some people it works.

radiant heat panels will last up to 40 years runs at like 15 watts extremely efficient and will be all you need.

before you start telling people like x-factor to shut up because he doesnt know anything or because you think he only has a 7 foot snake, give the man a chance he is pretty smart to.
