I have worked with bosc monittors at the zoo and they dont always need to burrow. I dont wanna start no fights but the zoo has kept a monitor for over 19 years with out a burrrowing substrate

Thanks, 50 lbs is a bit much lol, especially with gas the way it is atm (high shipping).
I checked out the bean farm though, and they sell 5 lb bags.
Wonder how long 5 lbs of bedding would work for 2 enclosures? =/
**Edit* Actually, how much S&H would be added to the 50 lb bag? If its only like 15 bucks then thats a helluva price.

Depends on where you live. It costs me from American E about 20 bucks to ship it here.

When I used shavings, I would use screened pine, which comes in a massive bale-sized bag. I dont remember the brand. I also used fibersorb, a recycled newspaper product for a long time, but my local spot stopped carrying it, soooo I dont know what I am going to do.

IDK about pine, it has phenols in it.
But your probably well aware of that so im assuming screened=no phenols?

are you serious....Monitors are rarely seen in the wild, because they are burrowed underground! They are a burrowing animal, and keeping a monitor on newspaper is plain cruel. If you actually believe that it is safe, then you are nowhere near ready for any monitor

Try your local Tractor Supply or Southern States or any such feed/livestock supply store. They often have 50 lb bales of it for like 7 bucks max. If they don't have what you want on the sales floor they can sometimes order it for you. I used to go through 2 50lb bags a week for my guinea pigs so buying in bulk was the ONLY way to go.

Just use cypress. You get a big bag for cheap -- holds humidity better, doesn't mold from frequent/heavy misting, and is easier on the eyes IMO. Also, it doesn't make all that yucky dust that aspen does. If you go with cypress mulch, just be sure a bake it for 30 minutes at 300 degrees to kill any bugs that may be living in the bag (same as you should with aspen). I got a big 55 gallon trash can and just dumped in there as I baked it until I was done and put it in the enclosures. I LOVE IT....way better than aspen, IMO.
.
BTW, don't get me wrong, I still use aspen in ONE of my enclosures, but its because I have a ton of it stored at the house and I'm just trying to use it up now lol.
.
Sorry for the long-winded-ness......I'm kinda hyper right now for some reason.....
