Almost all kingsnakes and milksnakes do well with a maintenance temperature gradient of 84-88 degrees F on the warm end and 70-75 degrees at the cool end.

I wouldnt be too worried.. how cold do you keep your snake room? If its below 72 and you are worried about a fire, i would invest in a radiant heat panel. They are more electricity efficient than bulbs and pose no fire risk whatsoever. If you keep your snake room in the mid 70's they should be fine overnight without the heat on, so long as you make sure the next day they have adequate warmth...

My room is not heated at the moment, so room temp is prob about 15c at night. Would a heat panel be ok in a 12" high tank, don't wanna cook the fella

You could use a Red heat light for night time. It works really well for my Balls. It keeps my 10 gallon right around 81 at night. Or a ceramic heat emitter would work for night as well. Just remember the higher the wattage the more heat it puts out. You could probably use a 60 Watt and be fine.

a kingsnake and or milk snake will do just fine in room temps....even if it gets cool heck even into the low 60's they will be just fine! i know many many people that dont even supply a heat source at all for there kings and they have been breeding just fine for years.
if you have a heat pad and your bedroom as a typical temps for a household then the snake will be just fine on a heat pad alone. snakes arent as anal as people can make them out to be.
fyi im keeping a baby surinam without any extra heat at the moment and its eating and biteing and crapping just fine. king snakes are much more tolerant of temp changes then boas so do not stress or over analyze...what you are doing is just fine.
