Niles are like any reptile,they all have there own personalities 
I have personnaly held some that were complete sweethearts and others,well i would not try and give it a kiss..LOL.
Just have alot of patience and time and i am sure he will come around.
If not,well just use your head and watch out for the tail lash and teeth. |

Some do not come around. Some that are (like most) plucked straight from the wild stay very scared of humans just like our water monitor. When you get an animal that is so stressed when it sees a human it throws up, you realize no amount of working with it or behavior conditioning may ever change it. Then you learn to do what ever is necessary to get it to keep food down and stress it as little as possible.
Bottom line is if they enjoy being held they are cold. Even my nice monitors do not like being picked up. They flail until you put them back down. Being picked up is not a natural thing for any monitor unless it is being eaten. So be careful and watch your fingers. Love the reptile for what it is not what you want it to be.
