Lightbulb nile monitor

a lot of people say im crazy for owning a nile monitor lizard. i dont think so. i mean yes ive been bitten multiple times by him but i dont think im crazy for owning him. a lot of people told me you dont know what your getting yourself into. i knew the exact challenge i was getting myself into. i know how big and mean they get. i know how much money and time im going to need to devote to him. and me and my girlfriend are both willing to do that. and hey i might lose a finger in the process but its only a finger or two. i just wanted to know what other people thought about this.

Fingers are overrated. I wish I could own a Nile Monitor.

What do I think?
I think you should leave monitors to those who plan on keeping their fingers. Maybe its just the way you posted, but it sounds like you want to lose a finger or two, or atleast expect to.

You don't need to lose a finger to keep a monitor.
If you lose a finger it is your own fault. If you don't want a finger, cut one off with a saw. Do not bring negative attention to monitors by being irresponsible.

I suppose its possible you were joking...but I couldnt tell.

RE: nile monitor

I have a 4 1/2 Nile that I've had since it was a baby. It's four or five years old (I can't remember) and actually pretty calm. It used to be extremely aggressive and would charge me when I tried to clean it's enclosure. Now that it's older, it's very used to me. It's laid back and will even tolerate a little petting. I've never been bitten, but I've been tail whipped a couple of times. But the feeding response is unbelievable! I feed it frozen/thawed rodents because it's a little too crazy with live. It runs all over chasing the rodents and slams them up against the sides of the enclosure.

Been bitten by a salvator and almost lost use of my thumb. The venom properties they have make for a ton of blood. Not something to be underestimated. It may sever your hand. Be careful.
