its hard to believe how food aggresice these guys can be. i understand where the feeding outside comes from as far as cage aggression goes. and its great for just about every other snake but these guys and im going to talk about burms in specific are just nuts at feeding time. as soon as that rabbit hits the water to start thawing out she goes into hunting mode and stays that way until sometimes the next day. and even then she gets prissy cause she doesnt want to be messed with until she poops which is usually 4 days later then a little poop comes and she is happy as can be. i wish i had listened in the beginning with raz, and i even tried to express that to the other person.

luckly she wasnt 15 feet when it happened lol.
im guessing with all extremely large snakes, burms, retics, condas, afrocks, ect they just arnt suited for outside enclosure feeding. maybe even rtbs when they get larger???

I only feed inside the enclosure, how ever my retic is the only animal with a separate feeding door to reduce door aggression. She is smart enough to know which door is for cleaning and handling and which door is for food.
I am just happy you survived and are still around to help others. I knew from our cage discussions you only want what is best for your reptiles and feeding in the cage was a lesson you were just going to have to learn from experience. Good luck with your reptiles and helping convince others of their dangerous potential. You should see people when I tell them a RTB almost choked me out. They look at me like I have 3 eyes.

Never underestimate a large powerful reptile.

lol well considering the fact that when i got karma she was between 5 and 6 feet almost bone skinny, not really but not healthy weight and hadnt eaten in 4 months and it was the first time i had ever been constricted. the bite was nothing compared to the sheer power of her muscles, it was like having a small school bus on me. most of her body was on my arm just the last 1/4th got a hold of my neck luckily. it was my right arm she constricted and still since november it hasnt felt right, exspecially my shoulder felt like she ripped it out of socket. all i can say is i will never underestimate them again.

Pythonguy, for what it is worth, I appreciate what you tried to do. I wanted a burm pretty bad and bought a baby at the Hamburg show in August. I thought I had it all worked out and then I realized, the help that I had lined up was dependant upon my job, I could end up moving every so often due to it and there was no guarantee that at the next place I would have help. My girls (wasn't going to get married at the time) will be growing up and leaving the nest, so I suddenly realized that I might end up alone trying to care for a burm that would be 8 years old or so by that time. No way I should be doing that by myself, eventhough I am 6'1" and a big guy. Eventhough I felt bad, I searched around and found a burm/redtail breeder (no, not to each other...jeesh!) and traded him the burm with some cash for two baby redtails.

I never underestimate my reptiles anymore, but make no mistake I was like you. I learned the hard way, now I try to keep others from doing the same. Heck when my boas was 8 feet, I was convinced handling an 8 foot retic would be about the same, I was terribly wrong. I wish Morti had stated a retic is like "pulling an anchor" when I was considering one.
It is very easy to get complacent and make a mistake, just do the best you can. I screwed up big time just the other week, with my big monitor.

Be sure you have 2 people present when opening the cage of a 6+ foot heavy constrictor.
