You know, I may be the only old-fart on this site, but having a 16 year old daughter, I would not condone her membership to a site like that, or be a member myself.

We already discussed this in the beginnings of this forum. It was decided against as there would be no way to ensure the ages of those who got into the "adult" section. Also, once things open up like that they seem to get out of control pretty quickly. We are already pretty lax here and allow the filters to do most of the work, only really stepping in when someone is deliberately aiming derogatory terms at another person or who feels "slick" enough to dance around the filter. I have never personally given any infraction for language so as far as I am concerned this site is pretty leaneant (sp).
The fact is that reptile keeping is far from only and adult hobby. I started keeping them when I was 11 as I was allergic to dogs. The ability to have a place that I liked going to AND that would have had parental approval would have saved many of my pets in the early years.
Seems better to prevent such language and subject matter problems then to keep picking at them after the ball already starts rolling. As Brandon said....there is plenty of space for PM's

wasnt talking about talking dirty. like for pics and stuff. no porn or anything, but some more risque pics. also would be a great place for adult conversation that isnt herp related. its a must have on every forum IMO.

it is easy to ensure. you set up and adult usergroup, and an adult section. set the permissions where only the adult usergroup can see that section and closely monitor who you allow into the adult usergroup.

The problem there is that the "elitist" types would spend all there time in there and obstain from as many conversations in the main forums. This has been gone over before. I am not saying that it will NEVER happen, just that this place wasn't set up for that kind of interaction.

Maybe Jesse can add to this because I don't know personally, but how would that be monitored? I mean, if an age limit is set, what's to stop a new member who is underage from creating a new account and registering with a later birth year so that the adult forum could be accessed? With that, the only way I know of is to monitor the IP address. But with a growing community, that would be a losing battle trying to keep tabs on everything.
.
I don't know the mechanics of this forum's applications, so perhaps there are other barriers that could be implicated.
.
My personal opinion on this is that you (all members) have a private inbox. The material there is not monitored with the exception of the potty mouth filter. You can be as nasty, controversial, suggestive, explicit etc etc as you want to be. Underage kids are smart. If they want to, they can figure out a way to get around all the loop holes.

It sounds fun, but it would just be too much of a hassle. Plus, if you give people a free stomping ground. all kinds of #$!#$!#$!#$! talking starts. It would take away a lot of integrity from the site.

this is an opinion topic really. but isnt this a family site. no need to talk dirty on it. if you wanna talk so dirty you have private messeges. also there are many other sites on the web that are exactly for adults to talk in and do stuff in. sign up for one and and do what adults do. thats just that. also some of these adults on here arent thinking about the kids. what if your kid was to get on a reptile site and like already said you thought it was all safe and they got into an adult section in it, you wouldnt be thinking the same thing anymore would you, you wouldnt let them on it anymore or something of that major if you were a resposible adult parent. this is just my opinion thats coming from a 16 year old, but i do think it is very good. remeber though this is just my opinion.
